Solving the problem of masking medication has never been easier than making your own pet pill pockets customized with your pet\u2019s health (and taste buds) in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Grand Design<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pet pill pockets are, by design, very simple, but store-bought versions can add up fast for pet owners that need to give daily, or multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/veterinary-services\/veterinary-pharmacy.html\">medications<\/a>, throughout the day (think $8-13 for 30 pockets). Similarly, pets that depend on medications for life can be keen on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/veterinary-services\/pet-dental-care.html\">spitting out<\/a> the required dose when it comes via a tasteless pill pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Homemade pill pockets easier on the wallet, and the following instructions can be tailor-made to suit your pet\u2019s tastes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Wonder of Three<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting out, you might decide that three-ingredient recipes are the way to please your pet and effectively dose them. The combination of peanut butter, flour, and milk (or water) satisfy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/healthy-fall-treats-for-pets\/\">basic cravings<\/a> and get the job done, to boot!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Mix <strong>1 tablespoon<\/strong> of Xylitol-free <strong>peanut butter<\/strong> (chunky may hide the pill better) with <strong>2 tablespoons<\/strong> <strong>flour<\/strong> and <strong>1 tablespoon milk<\/strong>.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Roll into <strong>12 bite size<\/strong> balls or cubes<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Using a pencil eraser or the end of small wooden spoon, make an indentation into the middle<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Slide medication into the pocket and cover up with dough<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Store in an airtight container or Ziploc bag for a week or freeze for 3 months (be sure to thaw before giving them to your pet)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Excellent Substitutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any type of flour can be used, such as all-purpose, whole wheat, barley, coconut, or spelt. We strongly advise against yeasted, uncooked dough as it can be very dangerous to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/gastrointestinal-blockages-in-pets\/\">gastrointestinal tract<\/a>, but plain flour is perfectly safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise, substitute cow\u2019s milk for water or coconut milk. Lastly, if your pet doesn\u2019t like peanut butter, try cooked ground meat or cheese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DIY Pill Pockets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/veterinary-services\/veterinary-pharmacy.html\">pet pill pockets<\/a> allow you to be in full control of whatever your pet is eating.
