No biggie! With a bit of determination, patience, and a positive can-do attitude, you can learn how to love a dog \u2013 and, what\u2019s more, be loved in return.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Cheat Sheet<\/h3>\n<p>There are a few basics to letting a dog know you aren\u2019t a threat. For starters, lower your voice to a slow, soothing tone. Get down on the animal\u2019s level or even below where they stand. Do not run directly at the animal or maintain constant eye contact. Mimic the sounds the animal makes, like a breathy pant, squeal, bark, and sneeze.<\/p>\n<h3>Other Approaches<\/h3>\n<p>Trying to show your dog how much you love and appreciate them? Try these tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start with an ear rub to trigger and release endorphins.<\/li>\n<li>Praise them, and say \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Feed your dog one piece of kibble at a time \u2013 by hand.<\/li>\n<li>Pay close attention to what they\u2019re trying to tell you with their body language.<\/li>\n<li>Give them space before they need to ask for it.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/exercise-more-fun-for-your-pet\/\">Exercise, exercise, exercise<\/a>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Training is another huge boon to the human-dog relationship. Once it happens, you\u2019ll know it, and you\u2019ll have zero regrets about how you landed there. Once you\u2019ve laid the groundwork and shown how much you love a dog, they\u2019ll demonstrate affection in their own way, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sustained eye contact with happy blinks<\/li>\n<li>Ecstatic about your return home<\/li>\n<li>Constantly happy to see you (even if you\u2019ve been together all day!)<\/li>\n<li>Can relax with you directly nearby<\/li>\n<li>Shows you their belly<\/li>\n<li>Responds to you<\/li>\n<li>Seeks you out (and your best scratching game)<\/li>\n<li>Won\u2019t try to escape or run away<\/li>\n<li>Wags their tail<\/li>\n<li>Endless <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/pet-kisses\/\">smooches<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Bows encouragingly to say \u201clet\u2019s play\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Snuggles up in your belongings (and may try to eat your shoes\u2026)<\/li>\n<li>Readily accepts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/winter-pet-grooming\/\">grooming attempts<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re lucky enough to love a dog, get ready for a lifetime of love in return.
