This buzzword has become the term most associated with how to help your cat find stimulation and entertainment indoors. And, there are a plethora of ideas! We\u2019ve decided to share some of our favorites. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basic Instincts<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats have certain innate and natural instincts that they need to pursue if they are going to be truly healthy and happy. These include hunting, surveying territory from a perch, scratching, and climbing. When in the wild (or outdoors), cats have many opportunities to exercise these behaviors. Indoors, it\u2019s our job to mimic the conditions that cats need so they can practice these natural instincts in the safety of their home. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of Environmental Enrichment for Cats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the many benefits of environmental enrichment for cats include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeps your cat fit and lean &#8211; and therefore healthier<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helps your cat exhibit behaviors in an appropriate way (instead of in ways you dislike)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/cat-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alleviates stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and stress related behaviors <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increases the bond between you and your cat, making you both happier<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can help ease tensions between cats in multiple cat households<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Enrichment Ideas<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the fun part! Some of our favorite ideas are listed below. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The basics \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Basic supplies like food dishes, water bowls and litter boxes are also a part of your cat\u2019s environment. Especially in multi-cat households, it\u2019s important to note that cats may compete for these important resources, and shy cats may avoid resources if they have to cross paths with a more aggressive housemate. It\u2019s best to provide dishes and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/litter-box-lament\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">litter boxes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for each cat to avoid bullying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Playtime \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Environmental enrichment for cats is not just about toys, but it can be a great start. Choose toys and games that your kitty enjoys, and expand their horizons every so often. Novelty is key for cats, who need mental as well as physical exercise every day in order to thrive. Use interactive toys like feather wands, and add in object play with crinkle balls, furry mice, and other small toys. For real fun, cut paw sized holes in an empty tissue box and place any of these in. Tape up the sides, and watch your kitty go to town! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Bring the outdoors in \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> One of the best ways to add to your cat\u2019s environment is with safe outdoor spaces. Catios are all the rage, and run the gamut from an outdoor temporary tent, to tunnels, to window boxes, to full-on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catiospaces.com\/catios-cat-enclosures\/custom-designs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cat enclosures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bringing in some cat safe plants for grazing is always a great idea. Catmint, grass, spider plant are a few of our favorites. Browse the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/animal-poison-control\/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASPCA list of non-toxic plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Food related fun \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stalking and hunting prey are activities that build anticipation and release dopamine for cats &#8211; the feel good hormone that wards off depression and keeps your cat mentally fit. Give your cat chances to \u201chunt\u201d toys with <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Climbing the walls \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You don\u2019t have to spend a lot of money to create a special place for your cat to climb. Vertical space for climbing and surveying their territory from above can be a standard cat tree, or wall hanging shelves or perches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Scratch it \u2013<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We all know that if your cat doesn\u2019t have an excellent scratching post, they\u2019ll find one in your couch, favorite chair, or carpet. Choose a scratching post that allows your cat to stretch to her full length, to keep her the happiest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how confident your cat is, make sure there are hiding places in her environment as every cat needs to hide now and then.
