Like the saying goes \u201cif it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it\u201d, we are all accustomed to prioritizing needs in order of what\u2019s pressing or necessary in the moment. Pet paw care can sometimes fit in this category, but ignoring your pet\u2019s feet can really land them in trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not Obvious<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the most dedicated and thorough pet owners are guilty of allowing their pet\u2019s paw care to slide to the backburner. However, certain issues with the paws can cause discomfort, pain, and suffering if left alone for too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meant for Walking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s true, paw pads are sturdy enough for long hours hitting rough surfaces. The crux of pet paw care is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/veterinary-services\/pet-wellness.html\">preventing injuries<\/a> so they can keep up an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/powder-hounds-keeping-pets-active-throughout-winters-chill\/\">active lifestyle<\/a>. Our California climate is mild enough, but that doesn\u2019t mean pets aren\u2019t exposed to burns or frostbite. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the colder weather your pet may also come into contact with various chemicals, such as salt, or other snow\/ice products. Always wash and dry your pet\u2019s paws when they come inside. Even if these chemicals aren\u2019t on the ground, this is a good habit to keep their feet as clean as possible. Be sure to keep them away from slippery surfaces as they can quickly become injured if they fall. If you do see ice, steer your pet away from it as their paw pads can get cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speaking of the Weather<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it\u2019s ever too cold outside for you, it\u2019s definitely too cold for your pet. Left outside for too long, frostbite can occur on the nose, ears, and paws. You can keep them warm by dressing them in appropriate seasonal gear. Booties, for example, offer great protection from frozen ground and traction on wet, slippery ground. Foot wax (when used as directed) can be a part of pet paw care, too, if your pet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/pet-sweat\/\">doesn&#8217;t like wearing booties<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Now, the Heat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before we know it, the summer sun will be bearing down on us. Keep in mind that asphalt, concrete, gravel, sand, and even dirt can absorb heat. Pet paw care in the spring and summer is similar to winter: if it\u2019s too hot for you to walk barefoot outside, it\u2019s much too hot for those delicate paws.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoid long walks in the middle of the day when the ground is much hotter. Opt for early morning or evening walks, and take frequent water and rest breaks in the shade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Supporting Pet Paw Care<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you ever notice that your pet is limping, licking at their paws, protecting their paws from your touch, or bleeding, it\u2019s time to address what\u2019s going on. They could have a cut or burn, but it\u2019s common for pet owners to see burrs, thorns, foxtails, and other sharp objects stuck in the paw pads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For the Long Haul<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Establishing touch is essential in a pet\u2019s early life. If an animal goes for a long time without human contact on their feet, it can take some doing to get them to relax and accept the attention there. This is why introducing nail trimming early on is so important. As they grow into adults, animals experience less stress when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/winter-pet-grooming\/\">they are groomed<\/a>.
