But, are there specific things to know to keep your dog safe at the beach?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/\">Rocklin Ranch Veterinary Hospital<\/a> is your partner in pet health and safety, so join us as we explore this question.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Keep Your Dog Safe at the Beach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some things to know to ensure a day at the beach doesn\u2019t end in disaster. Here are our top tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Not all dogs are swimmers <\/strong>\u2014 Some dogs aren\u2019t interested in swimming or don\u2019t swim naturally, or are not anatomically \u201cset-up\u201d for swimming (such as Basset Hounds and Corgis). Don\u2019t assume your dog will take to the water, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/dog-to-swim\/\">try swimming in shallow water<\/a> before a big beach trip. Never force your dog into the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Drinking salt water is a bad idea <\/strong>\u2014 Drinking salt water can be hazardous to your dog\u2019s health. Aside from bacteria that can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/leptospirosis-2\/\">infectious disease<\/a>, the salt content can disturb your dog\u2019s electrolyte balance and speed dehydration. Always provide fresh, clean drinking water and discourage your dog from drinking from the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Observe the conditions<\/strong> \u2014 Ocean conditions change rapidly. It\u2019s important to pay attention to currents, tides, underwater hazards, and weather. You should also watch carefully so that your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/when-it-comes-to-wildlife-keep-an-eye-on-pet-safety\/\">dog doesn\u2019t disturb wildlife<\/a> or get injured by shells, coral, or jellyfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be aware of your dog\u2019s fitness level <\/strong>\u2014 Some dogs will go forever when chasing a ball, to the point of exhaustion. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/water-safety-tips-for-pets\/\">A tired dog is at a greater risk for drowning<\/a>, so be sure you quit while you\u2019re ahead.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Start slow <\/strong>\u2014 Even fit dogs need to warm up. Start your day at the beach slowly and build up to more ball play or swimming as your dog\u2019s muscles and joints warm up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Invest in a life vest<\/strong> \u2014 Waves, currents, and tides make for more strenuous swimming than in other places. Life vests made for dogs come in all sizes. Look for one that fastens at three places and has a handle on the back, so you can lift your dog out of the water if need be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Head for cover <\/strong>\u2014 Remember not to overdo it! Summer sun is hot, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/heatstroke-in-pets\/\">heat stress<\/a> is a common reality for many dogs, even at the beach. Find a shady place to cool off and rest as frequently as you can. Consider an inexpensive beach tent as a comfortable place to relax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Towel off <\/strong>\u2014 When done playing, it\u2019s time to rinse off salt water, debris, and sand. Be sure to dry her thoroughly, paying special attention to her ears and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/year-round-pet-paw-care-to-keep-little-feet-happy\/\">feet<\/a>.
