Treats can be used for training, as a hiding place for medications, or simply to show our pets how much we care. Unfortunately, many pet treats contain fillers, sugar, and other&nbsp; So how can we be sure the treats we give our precious pets are healthy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Read The Pet Treat Labels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By now, we\u2019ve all heard about the importance of reading the labels of every food item we buy, and pet treats are no exception. Look for whole food ingredients (for example \u201cchicken\u201d rather than \u201canimal meal\u201d) and natural sweeteners such as applesauce or molasses. Food coloring has no place in pet treats or food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making Healthy Pet Treats at Home<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to keep your pet\u2019s treats free of unhealthy ingredients, preservatives, and fillers is to make them yourself! A quick internet search will yield plenty of ideas for DIY healthy pet treats, but these are some of our favorite recipes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.puppyleaks.com\/pb-dog-treats\/\">Quick and Easy Peanut Butter Dog Treats<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/irresistiblepets.net\/diy-frozen-apple-dog-treat-recipe\/\">Frozen Apple Dog Treats<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kitschencat.com\/2015319tastytunacattreats\/\">Tasty Tuna Cat Treats<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keep it Simple<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t feel like sweating it out in the kitchen? No problem! Many \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/pets-and-people-food-2\/\">people foods<\/a>\u201d are highly nutritious and make excellent choices for healthy pet treats. Thinkpeeled, de-seeded fresh fruits, steamed, plain veggies, or simple pantry staples such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pears<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bananas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Melons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Berries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Green beans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sweet potatoes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Squash<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pumpkin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Broccoli<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cauliflower<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brussels sprouts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plain yogurt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plain, air-popped popcorn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Natural peanut butter (be sure it doesn\u2019t contain the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/?s=xylitol\">artificial sweetener Xylitol, as this ingredient is highly toxic to pets)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsafe or toxic foods include chocolate, macadamia nuts, alcohol, onions\/garlic, grapes\/raisins, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/not-so-sweet-xylitol-poisoning-in-pets\/\">especially Xylitol<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find What Works for Your Pets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Experiment with any of the above ingredients alone, or in combination with one another. Try freezing fresh fruits on a baking sheet, or whipping up a healthy mix to pour into popsicle molds for a refreshing treat. Unsalted chicken or beef broth frozen in ice cube trays is a fun way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/the-parched-pet-how-to-keep-your-pet-hydrated\/\">keep pets hydrated<\/a> during the warmer months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like their human family members, dogs and cats do best when they eat a reasonable amount of healthy, nutrient-dense food.
