The colorful, shiny looking packets of concentrated laundry detergent are attention grabbing to curious little ones, to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>The dangers of these detergent pods to our household pets, however, have received far less attention. Learn why laundry detergent pods and pets don\u2019t mix and how to protect your household.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"h.athw73pk4ojo\"><\/a>Why Laundry Detergent Pods are Dangerous<\/h3>\n<p>Any laundry detergent ingestion can be bad. Most chemicals of this type contain surfactants that can cause irritation of the gastrointestinal system (think vomiting and diarrhea). While this isn\u2019t fun for anyone, concentrated laundry detergent pods pose a completely different hazard.<\/p>\n<p>Because the detergent is under a large amount of pressure in its little packet, when a pet (or child) bites into the pod, the contents spray out and large amounts are often ingested or even inhaled. Inhalation can lead to severe irritation of the respiratory tract and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.petmd.com\/dog\/conditions\/respiratory\/c_multi_pneumonia_aspiration&amp;sa=D&amp;usg=AFQjCNETwZTxpGCs7JEfY8PrMsJ2645aNQ\">aspiration pneumonia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dogs are much more likely to attempt to ingest the pods, while cats are more prone to knocking over a small amount of liquid detergent or groom it off of themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Pets who ingest or aspirate concentrated laundry detergent may experience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drooling<\/li>\n<li><a name=\"h.gjdgxs\"><\/a>Vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Gagging\/retching<\/li>\n<li>Coughing<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty breathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because the contents of the pods are under pressure, detergent squirting into eyes and other sensitive areas has also been reported.<\/p>\n<h3><a name=\"h.73132cq6cd3v\"><\/a>Laundry Detergent Pods and Pets<\/h3>\n<p>Laundry detergent pods and pets are not a good combination.
