Dental care and health is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/pet-dental-care-essential\/#more-278\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cornerstone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of overall <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/the-importance-of-regular-pet-wellness-exams\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wellness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for both people and pets, and we hope to increase education and awareness of this vitally important health regimen.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Is Pet Dental Care Important?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s more to dental health than keeping those pearly whites clean. Dental infection and disease in pets can trigger a host of other, more serious, conditions ranging from problems with the immune system and organs to diabetes and cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your pet\u2019s dental health arsenal is multi-faceted and should include regular dental exams and cleaning, home care, and proper nutrition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What To Look For<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pets are notoriously stoic when it comes to pain, so it\u2019s up to us pet owners to keep an eye on our pet\u2019s dental health. Look for the following signs of pet dental disease:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foul breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite\/difficulty eating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive drooling (especially in cats)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rubbing or pawing at mouth area<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleeding from mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broken or worn teeth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discolored teeth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, give us a call to schedule a dental examination right away. Early diagnosis and treatment of pet dental issues will not only save your pet\u2019s teeth and prevent pain, it can also add years to his or her life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Healthy Teeth Begin At Home<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your pet\u2019s oral health doesn\u2019t end with regular visits to the vet. Attending to your pet\u2019s dental needs at home is a vitally important component in preventing dental disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Take A Look<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Once per week, lift your pet\u2019s lips and examine his or her mouth for signs of dental disease. Gums should be pink and not show signs of swelling. Teeth should be clean and free of tartar<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Brush, Brush, Brush<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Using pet-friendly toothpaste, brush your pet\u2019s teeth gently as often as possible. Please never use human toothpastes for pets!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Chew On This<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 Chewing is not only pleasurable for dogs but also helps to keep his or her teeth healthy. Provide your dog with good quality chew toys made from soft nylon, rubber, or rawhide.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>A Special Note For Cat Owners<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may seem like brushing a cat\u2019s teeth is an impossible task, but don\u2019t give up so easily! <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most pet toothbrushes are too large for a cat\u2019s mouth. Try an infant finger brush or piece of gauze instead.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brush the teeth in a circular motion, much in the same way you brush your own teeth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you can\u2019t seem to keep Whiskers still while brushing, wrap him or her in a towel or blanket.
