While it\u2019s not a risk that can be vaccinated against, the signs of dog bloat can be intercepted by vigilant owners. If treated immediately, you and your dog will enjoy many more years and snuggles together. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>What is GDV?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog bloat is known as gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV), which refers to the buildup of unreleased gas in the stomach. This happens as a result of the stomach twisting 360 degrees, cutting off the esophagus and the duodenum. If gas, fluid, and food are unable to move out of the stomach \u2013 and your pet does not receive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/pet-emergency\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the blood supply can get cut off, resulting in death.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>What Makes the Stomach Twist?<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, we don\u2019t know what causes dog bloat. However, many experts agree it develops as a result of ingesting too much water or food before strenuous activity. The food and water inside the stomach become gaseous and start expanding.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Preventing Dog Bloat<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/what-it-means-to-be-a-responsible-pet-owner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responsible<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dog owners avoid such a terrible condition? However, deep-chested breeds (e.g., dobermans, great danes, boxers, akitas, retrievers, poodles) are at a higher risk of developing GDV. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>What to Look for<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your dog is experiencing GDV, you may observe the following symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pacing<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stiff walking<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salivation or drooling<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hard or distended abdomen that may sound hollow when you tap it<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain when the belly is touched<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unproductive retching<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collapse<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We urge you to contact us if you notice any of these symptoms.
