This scenario is not uncommon, and it may seem unwarranted at times. However, there are numerous reasons why cats bite.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Had Enough<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no conclusive evidence as to why cats bite while being petted &#8211; it could mean your cat loves you or it could signal that he or she has had enough petting. Many cats offer \u201clove bites,\u201d but these aren\u2019t exclusively doled out during snuggle time. If you\u2019ve ever had your ankles bitten by a cat lying in wait, you already know what this is all about. It\u2019s called redirected aggression and is carried out as a reflex of your cat. <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b>Different Strokes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a group, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/veterinary-services\/pet-wellness.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kittens and cats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are fairly aggressive during play. They stalk, jump, swat, pounce, and &#8211; you guessed it &#8211; bite. When this aggression is directed at you, it\u2019s not uncommon to experience a scratch or bite. But it\u2019s all in good fun, right? While you certainly don\u2019t want to encourage this behavior, scolding or punishing will not solve the problem (and could even make things worse). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/what-it-means-to-be-a-responsible-pet-owner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">owner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a young cat or kitten, get him or her used to gentle touches and handling. Early exposure to other people and pets can also help establish proper behavior and build confidence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>When to Question <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The line between playful behavior and aggression can be downright fuzzy. In fact, your cat can probably flip quickly between the two extremes. While he or she could just be playing, it\u2019s important to stop aggressive behaviors before they become a habit. Observe your cat\u2019s body language and back off if you ever notice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flattened or pinned back ears<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trashing tail<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fur standing up<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growling or hissing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Direct stare with dilated pupils<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cats bite for a number of reasons, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defending territory<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When injured or in pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To protect offspring<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guarding against an attack from a predator<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more threatened your cat feels, the more likely it is that he or she will bite.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What to do When Cats Bite<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National dog bite prevention week draws considerable interest and attention, but cat bite awareness pales in comparison. If you or someone you know is bitten by a cat, a medical professional should examine the bite. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection. If you live with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/kids-and-pet-care-one-big-happy-family\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">child<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, make sure your feline is never in a situation that could result in a cat bite or scratch. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some cats bite as a result of toxoplasmosis, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/veterinary-services\/pet-dental-care.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dental<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disease, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/pet-health\/pet-vaccinations.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rabies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, trauma, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/young-heart-caring-senior-pets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or as a result of age-related cognitive impairment.
