It\u2019s easy to assume our furry companions can clean their own ears, and if there\u2019s a problem, we\u2019d know it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, dogs and cats need their ears cleaned periodically (especially dogs). This prevents infection and allows you to look for problems such as mites, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/how-to-remove-ticks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ticks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or underlying health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because ear health can be a subtle yet important indicator of a number of different conditions, ear cleaning is an essential part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/blog\/groom-your-cat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grooming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and pet care.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><b>Symptoms of Ear Infections and Other Problems<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ear and skin problems are two of the most common reasons pets are taken to the veterinarian. Among dogs, bacterial and fungal ear infections are at the top of the list year after year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pet ears are quite sensitive. Because of extra hair and all those nooks and crannies, it\u2019s easy to overlook potential problems. At <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rocklin Ranch Veterinary Hospital,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we recommend inspecting pet ears at least once a week. Look around your pet\u2019s ear and inside the canal using a bright light or take your pet to a well-lit room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take note of the following symptoms or signs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foul smell<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discharge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scabs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent scratching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head shaking <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess ear wax or black debris<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ear infections in dogs and cats are a result of bacterial or yeast overgrowth in the middle, inner, or outer ear. Infections can also be caused by allergies, ear mites, tumors, skin disorders, or injury. Treatment depends on the cause of the infection but typically includes antibiotics or antifungal medication. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If left untreated, ear infections can cause a lot of pain and can result in hearing loss or deafness. If your pet exhibits any of these symptoms, please <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rocklinranchvet.com\/contact-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contact us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Cleaning Pet Ears the Safe and Easy Way<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleaning pet ears may be difficult at first, so try associating the process with a reward so your pet warms up to the idea. During the cleaning, incorporate a gentle massage or other pleasurable grooming, such as brushing your pet\u2019s fur. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To properly clean your pet\u2019s ears, follow these basic steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purchase a cat or dog ear cleaning solution (do not use solutions made for people or other animals). This will help break down wax and debris gently using nontoxic ingredients. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have cotton wipes (such as those used for makeup removal) or cotton balls on hand. Never use Q-tips, as these can damage the ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start at the outer edge of your pet\u2019s ear, inspecting and wiping the skin. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gently fold back the ear and work your way in. Do not attempt to go beyond what\u2019s visible \u2013 stop if you feel any resistance within the ear canal. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your cotton balls become particularly dirty, it\u2019s a good idea to schedule an exam since this may indicate mites or other problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although ears don\u2019t get the attention they deserve, they are critical to pet health and wellbeing.
