Summer fun in Northern California means trail trekking, backyard BBQs, and spending plenty of time outdoors with our pets. And while you’re lathering up with sunscreen and spritzing on bug spray, it’s important to remember that our four-legged friends need the same protection from the sun and biting bugs.

At Rocklin Ranch Veterinary Hospital + Urgent Care, we’ve seen itchy bug bites that have become infected, and ears that have blistered from sun exposure. That’s why our caring team emphasizes a proactive approach to protecting pets from sunburn and pests. Keep reading for important tips on choosing and using products to protect your pets this summer.

Protecting Pets From the Scorching Sun

Just like humans, pets can suffer from sunburn, especially those with light-colored or thin coats. Areas like noses, ears, and bellies are particularly vulnerable. And no, that pink glow is not a cute summer blush—it’s a sign your pet is uncomfortable and possibly getting a sunburn.

That’s where pet-safe sunscreen comes in. It’s not the same as your SPF 50. Many human sunscreens contain toxic ingredients like zinc oxide and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which can be dangerous if licked off by curious tongues (and let’s face it, they will lick it). Instead, opt for sunscreen made just for pets—free of toxic ingredients and safe to use on sensitive areas. Look for sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher that offers broad-spectrum protection (blocking both UVA and UVB rays). Don’t forget to reapply as needed, especially if your pet is a swimmer.

Battling Bugs the Safe Way

California summers also bring bugs—rather persistent ones. From mosquitoes to fleas and ticks, there’s a whole army of pests waiting to crash your dog’s hike or your cat’s sunny nap by the window.

Your first line of defense should always be a veterinarian-approved parasite preventive to protect your pets from dangerous diseases like heartworm and Lyme.

In addition to using a year-round parasite preventive, pet-safe bug sprays can offer extra protection when spending time in heavily wooded areas or other places where pests are prevalent. But don’t be tempted to share your bug spray with your pet. Many insect repellents made for humans contain DEET, a powerful chemical that can be highly toxic to pets. Even a small amount can cause vomiting, seizures, or worse. That’s why it’s super important to use a DEET-free bug spray formulated specifically for pets.
